it doesn't appear on any regulation chart I could find and this is the only example of it I have seen. Could it be a custom made item made for a canadian general ?

To also add something meaningful to the thread, here's a Czechoslovak People's Army hat prototype I found over at forum.csla.cz :

It was sold at an auction of military stuff some time ago. Here's the translation of the description given at the auction (provided by the member of that disussion board who posted the thread) :

A very pretty and rarely occuring hat. Around 1978 and 1979, the ČSLA was testing completely new uniforms for the tank army units (with black tones) and the motorized cavalry units (with green tones) - e.g. at the 2nd tank regiment base in Rakovník and in smaller numbers at the 21st tank regiment base in Žatec. They were absolutely ace and everyone liked to wear them. Unfortunately, they weren't adopted (they cost too much) and the Mk 85 "camo" got introduced instead. The auctioned hat was part of a tank trooper uniform and is of a different pattern than the Mk 85 hat.

So, if you'd ever write a story or TL set in communist era Czechoslovakia, maybe you could have the soldiers running around in these caps.

Soviet soldiers in body armour used for urban warfare during the Great Patriotic War. (This particular photo is probably staged, since the poses of the gunner and the flamethrowerman look a bit over-dramatic.)

The German "Peacetime Army" was the name given to to its armed forced during a period covering roughly the paris peace conference works. It lasted a little less then 5 months and sought to "deprussified" itself by using cuff rings instead of the epaulettes. Following the treaty of versaille, the general staff was abolished and a slightly different set of cuffrings were introduced with the topmost rank being oberst (colonel). Epaulettes were eventualy reintroduced.

Like petike said. Quite honnestly, I think its probably better to keep adding to this one then starting a new one every few months if there are no entries.

now, what part of the uniform warrant its inclusion ? (not an expert in british uniforms)
No, it just looked col. And useful for Ah.

if you mean the fact they have tam o'shanters, maybe put it in the "looks like alternate reality but isn't" instead. If people simply post pics of uniforms they find cool in this thread, it might make it harder to find something.

prototype of a uniform for an air force marshal of the USSR. It was meant to be worn for the Victory parade but for some reason, wasn't.

SS armbands

the armband insignias adopted by the SS in 1926. The number of ranks increased rapidly during the same year and except for the reichfuhrer, was abandonned in favour of collar pips and leaves in the following years.

They had a great uniform already to go, why not use this??
On the topic of French uniforms wouldn't a darker color of the original be acceptable? I've thought about having a TL in which the french use uniforms with dark blue overcoats(like dark blue denim jeans) and dark rust colored pants. I think that such colors would provide good camo in warzones such as no-mans-land and at night time.

SS collar patches

Though Himmler seemed more then happy at gaining control of non-german volunteer units and bring them within the Waffen SS, he was adamant that they (especialy the non-aryans) never wear the SS runes. For this reason, a number of special collar patches were designed for the various units though probably to make it seem like less of a snub, it was presented as a "privilege" given them.

Some of the patches never made it past the design stage while other were actualy produced but never issued due to wartime circumstances or the unit having stopped existing (or in the first case, never formed in the first place).

Below are some of those patches with the name of the units they were meant for (images collected from various sources).
