Many of the purported objections to the Constitution hinged on the fact that there was no listing of fundamental rights. Disregarding the fact that the Bill of Rights was shaped by the ratification debates, would opposition the Constitution have been significantly reduced if the content of the Bill of Rights had been adopted as an article of the Constitution? Was the absence of stated rights a real issue, or was it, among the political class a smokescreen for disapproval based on radical anti-federalism and personal politicking?
