Whenever I read about Roman Empire history, and especially late RE history, I'm always struck by how often there were civil wars whenever an Emperor died. And it's undisputed that this weakened and bankrupted the Empire (I'm reminded of Lincoln's quote "As a nation of free men, we will live forever or else die by suicide.”). So I'm wondering if anyone has solutions to reduce these wars. There's an obvious one: create a hereditary monarchy, where everyone agrees who's next in line, which probably won't work since the Romans were famously anti-monarchists. (Monarchy was never totally stable anywhere, but at least you had a produce a pretender/distant relative to put on the throne; during the Roman Empire any number of commanders could claim it.) Or maybe have a better system of vice/co-Emperors. In any event, my sense is that a method would have to be done several times before it gained acceptance.
