Red Storm In The East: Russia Declares War On Japan Earlier

So the use of examples on this forum is forbidden? This is the first I've heard of this.

Alright, let's run through this again:

Remember the Weapons of Choice ISOT trilogy? We as the readers were expected to swallow that as a neutral (Ceasefire with Germany back to 1939 borders agreed to Jun 42) working in just 22 months:

1) The Sovs built up an entire set of new construction dockyards in the Soviet Far East

2) They built an entirely new fleet of warships- two aircraft carriers, multiple cruisers and destroyers, plus landing craft, with crews fully trained and ships operational (NO, no ASB's. Just Bad Sci/fi.)

3) Oh, I forgot the jets and ASW helicopters and Marines

All this in a place in Siberia that has HOW many days of warm weather?

The author, John Birmingham, seemed to think phrases like "slave labor" and "died by the millions" would just cover everything.

So how does this exactly answer the OP's question of an earlier declaration of war by Russia on Japan in '42 or '43, or "prove the impossibility of such a rash Soviet action"? Note that there wasn't even any mention of the kamikazes afromentioned in the latter post.

If anything, it looks like a critique of the series (or personally, Final Impact, which I'll agree was poorly thought-out) that should be found here.

This development yields potential butterflies in the Cold War.

1. Does the Korean War ever take place?

2. Does the USSR overrun South East Asia until the mid 60s?

3. Do the Soviets push for global domination, now that they have China in their sphere of influence?

And perhaps the most important question of all:
Who is gonna build all the stuff we buy nowadays?

One thing that might be butterflied away is the Chinese Revolution-assuming there's any way the U.S. could court Mao as an ally post-war. The Russians would probably get Manchuria, though (perhaps that's where Mao would end up, although I wonder how long he would be happy as head of a Soviet puppet state...)

As for the last: maybe India?
