Reconquest of Latin America

Is there any scenario you can envision where after most of Latin America had gained its independence it was reconquered by European colonial powers? If so, how long could it remain under European control?

The USA will NOT stand idly. Remember the Munroe Doctrine later.

The only reason the Monroe Doctrine held any water was because of the power of the Royal Navy. It was (usually) in the interest of the British to keep the countries of Latin America from falling into the influence of other European powers.

Yeah, but I think America specially wouldn't like much royal navy around again... at least to later parts of the 19th century.

And what if it was the Britishes? They where interested I think...

No, they weren't at all. The US had a pathetic army and navy and had no real means to enforce the doctrine. It was in the interest of the British to keep those markets open. Latin America as a whole constituted a larger market than the United States for British goods. It is ultimately the support of Great Britain, not the Monroe Doctrine, which protected the sovereignty of Latin America’s newly independent nations. Remove their reasons for enforcing the neutrality of the seas (as an extention of the Pax Britannica) and those nations are much more suceptible to foreign influence.

Spain tried to reconquer Chile and Peru in the 1820s didn't they? How important were these particular markets to British interests?

Chile got independent in 1810, war reconquered by loyalists based on Perú, and it became independent again in 1818, as a result of a campaign led by San Martín (who led an army composed of chileneans and argentineans). Peru was loyalist until San Martín invaded El Callao in 1821. It's highlands remainded loyalists, and were eventualy "liberated" by Bolivar.

I think you may be referring to the´Chincha Islands War between Spain and Chile & Peru (1864-1866). Spain didn't try, however, to recover this countries, just to reasert its influence and get back some islands

So it seems like the most likely option would be for Britain to have less of a dominant navy, which would allow other European nations to make some gains, forcing Britain to get in on the game before it's all divided up.

When do you think the latest that this could happen is?

they tryed with mexico i think the Chincha Islands War was just over some islansds

After the end of the War for Independence there was the Battle of San Juan de Ulúa, where the Spanish planned to retake México with the one remaining foothold they had in the country in Veracruz harbor. That lasted from 1821 to 1825.

You also had the Battle of Pueblo Viejo in 1829, when the Spanish attempted again to invade and retake México. Spain failed both times, and interestingly enough Santa Anna was involved with the victories of both battles. His victory at Pueblo Viejo was one of the main reasons he became president later on, he became very popular because of it.
