Realistic way to create an independent Hong Kong?

It would be easy to create a dependent Singapore (in Malaysia)

But an independent Hong Kong:confused:

Even if the warlords, the KMT or the Beiyang recognized an Hong Kong Republic, the Communists would definitely say no.

(Besides, what are the incentives for the British to have an independent Hong Kong? It may seem logical when 1997 is drawing near, but before PRC?")

Unless it's a Socialist Republic of Hong Kong, supported by PRC with enthusiasm:rolleyes:.

You might need POD before leasing contract between China and United Kingdom. And if Hong Kong gains independence, China surely re-annex that.

If China ends up split between the North and South, with the Nationalist in charge in the South and the North a soviet client state, then the Nationalists would almost certainly be Western Allies, with a desire to state friendly with the West.

But the OTL Nationalists still refused to compromise on territorial issues. They *are* nationalists, after all. In fact Chiang Kai Shek was the one who laid the claim over the entire South China Sea. He was also the first person to congratulate Mao when he took over Tibet.

You put a couple of soviet tank divisions in Manchuria and Honk Kong is going to look relatively unimportant.

But there *were* 1.5 million Soviet troops in Manchuria in OTL. And from Truman's perspective, any British demand for a piece of Chinese territory is a nuisance to him. He will tell Attlee to back off with his demands or the Marshall Plan money won't come.

In any case, Mao won the Chinese Civil War *despite* Stalin, not because of him. Stalin was rightly afraid a Communist China will not obey Moscow. A Communist North China will in all likelihood still split with Moscow. Stalin will be even more paranoid of the US than OTL, since the US has a greater incentive to make secret deals with Mao.

EDIT: If anything, Truman will demand that Attlee hand back Hong Kong to South China just as France handed back Zhanjiang. That will increase Chiang's trust in the west.
