Reagan is notified early on Iran-Contra....

Suppose President Reagan had been notified about the Iran-Contra dealings as early as fall 1985...say around the time of his first meeting with Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev.

Would it have made much of a difference?

LOL, you think he DIDN'T know ? Are you Oliver North ? :)

The whole Republican position on that affair was classically Orwellian. I think what topped it off for me was an incident which happened just after the Tower Report was released. I was watching Nightline, and Ted Koppel read from the Tower Report a section detailing how we sold arms to the Iranians. Then they played a segment where Reagan declared "We have never sold arms to Iran." Then Koppel cut to Senator Alphonse D'Amato of New York, asking him to comment.

D'Amato's reply, and I kid you not, was...

"This just goes to show that President Reagan has never lied to the American people."

This, less than 10 seconds after the American people just watched Reagan lie to them.

And the worst thing was, Koppel let it go without challenge. It was at that point, I think, that I lost my idealism about politics and the unbiased fairness of the media.
