Reagan Impeachment

Watching the current events of a President usurping Congress and the will of the people to accumulate unfettered powers for his own twisted means, I was brought back to a moment when Congress could have put Presidential overreach in check. Don't know if this topic has already been posted, but what would have been the result if Dems had voted to impeach Reagan in 87' over Iran Contra and had held strong? Would it have naturally dissolved into partisan politics and only meant to rile up the right wing base? Would such a spectacle affected the 88' elections? Would it have tarnished Reagan's legacy to the point where he is no longer considered a right wing God or would it have only enhanced his image as a Jesus Martyr?

It would be risky. Reagan's mental decline could be used in his favour, making people think he's such a pitiable figure, how can those heartless Democrats drag him through the mud like this, AND providing anyone willing to believe the best about Reagan with a ready excuse, ie. well, obviously, he wasn't cognizant enough to know what his underlings were up to.

And that's just with the swing voters. You're also gonna have a lot of Republicans who think there was nothing wrong at all with helping the contras, even if it broke some stupid liberal law.

Republican Primary will roll out different. Outcome of that depends on how well Poppy Bush is seen as defending Reagan, and his 'out of the loop' excuses pan out
