Reagan/Ford in 1980

So apparently in 1980, the Reagan campaign first asked Gerald Ford to be the VP candidate, but Gerald Ford wanted to control some cabinet appointments (I think he wanted Alan Greenspan as the secretary of the treasury and Henry Kissinger as secretary of state?), and the Reagan Campaign rejected those conditions and asked George H.W. Bush to be the VP candidate. What do you think would have happened if Reagan accepted Ford's conditions? I doubt that it would have affected Reagan's election, but his administration would definitely look different...

I don't think Reagan would accept, and Ford's advisers, not Ford were the ones pushing this. Also, the age issue would be bigger than OTL because Ford was only two years younger than Reagan. Most importantly, you can't have the elephant of a former President in the new President's Cabinet. Why do you think Heath didn't join the Thatcher Cabinet, among other things?

This could turn out to be a public relations nightmare. I mean, wouldn't it be easy for Carter to criticize Reagan for 'not being ready to be President', because he put a former President at the VP spot?
