A few years ago, I read a short story that was a day in the life of the Kennedy family. One of the characters was not named until just before the end of the tale, but kept day dreaming about Dallas, 1963.
As the tale unfolds, you eventually get the impression that this character is little more than an imbecile(the type of mentality, not the insult), and is quite elderly.
At the end of the story, Sen. Ted Kennedy calls the idiot John.
What tale was about was Jack Kennedy surviving the assassination attempt, but, as it was a head shot that did him in, he was left with the mind of an idiot child the world at large never knew about.
As it has been a number of years since read this collection of short stories of alternate histories, and the book has since been misplaced, I have forgotten the title of the story, the name of author, but the title of the book was, I think, Other America, or Alternate America.
