ranuccio I of Portugal?

Ranuccio Farnese was the heir to the Duchy of Parma when in 1580, a question arose to who should become the new ruler of Portugal. Ranuccio was the heir by primogeniture to the throne, but as his father was an ally and vassal to Philip II of Spain his rights were not pushed forward and consequently Philip became king. What would it take for Philip II to back Ranuccio s claim to the throne to ensure he became king of Portugal? And what consequences could there be from such a thing?

I wrote a TL about it some years ago (well, the POD was Sebastian surviving Ksar-el-Kebir), but I had Philip II dying around 1580, the line of Catherine of Braganza being extinct and Rannuccio pressing his claim later, as an adult, while the Spanish were having conflicts. With the situation in 1580 as it was IOTL, I can see no reason why Philip would allow it, or even why the Portuguese would want it.

Ah, why is that? Would it be as he was a minor? And what could be done to ensure the Braganza then take the throne in 1580? Or would it simply be more beneficial for Sebastian to live?

Without the Portuguese fleet Spain armada would not of sailed against England. This Portuguese naval power would of been much stronger and could of pushed the Dutch back and had England as ally still.

Would this remove the constant fear of invasion from catholics in the English imagination?
