Ramsay MacDonald stays home

Jesus, I didn't realise this was such a controversial topic that it had to be moved here.:D

I already asked Ian to move them.

And I'll have you know that Ramsay MacDonald was very controversial when I first voted, young man, being an illegitimate Scotch Bolshie and all that. You 60-year olds have no appreciation for history.

The Conservatives fought the British general election of December 1923 on a policy of bringing in tariffs. If they had won that election they would have tried to implement that policy, perhaps negotiating with the Prime Ministers of the self-governing Dominions of the Empire to bring in Empire Free Trade. Otherwise its policies would be basically the same as the Conservative government's policies elected in October 1924 in OTL.

If the Conservative government had an adequate majority for a full five year term, Stanley Baldwin, the Prime Minister, would probably have called a general election in the early summer or autumn of 1928.

A Conservative victory in 1923 would probably have been more at the expense of the Liberals who won 159 seats in OTL, than of Labour. But the Liberals would have done better than in 1924 in OTL when they were reduced to 40 seats. In OTL, the Conservatives were losing by-elections to Labour and the Liberals in 1928, so they would probably have been defeated in a general election in 1928 in this scenario. But assuming that the Liberals won around 100 seats in 1923, they could gain another 30 to 40 seats in 1928, perhaps more. Labour would probably be the largest party but with no overall majority. So Ramsay MacDonald, or whoever is leader of the Labour Party would become Prime Minister.
