Ralph Peters' new book- THE WAR AFTER ARMAGEDDON

Has just been released in the US, but I dunno bout Australia yet- any of you guys come across this new FH novel ?

Well, one can hope that Ralph Peters does a better job in writing dystopic FH (then again, he already wrote "The War in 2020" ) than drawing random maps of the Middle East...

Shocking scenes of battle…unforgettable soldiers…heartbreaking betrayals…. In this stunning, fast-paced novel, a ruthless future war unfolds in a 21st century nightmare: Los Angeles is a radioactive ruin; Europe lies bleeding; and Israel has been destroyed…with millions slaughtered. A furious America fights to reclaim the devastated Holy Land.

The Marines storm ashore; the U.S. Army does battle in a Biblical landscape. Hi-tech weaponry is useless and primitive hatreds flare. Lt. Gen. Gary “Flintlock” Harris and his courageous warriors struggle for America’s survival--with ruthless enemies to their front and treachery at their rear. Islamist fanatics, crusading Christians, and unscrupulous politicians open the door to genocide.

The War After Armageddon thrusts the reader into a terrifying future in which all that remains is the horror of war--and the inspiration of individual heroism. A master at bringing to life “the eternal soldier,” Ralph Peters tells a riveting tale that honors those Americans who fight and sacrifice all for a dream of freedom.

[QUOTEsounds like islamophobic, militaristic, manifest destiny crap - this is about all the time i will give to it[/QUOTE]

Yep, same goes for me, might be worth having a copy around around though, just in case i run out of toilet paper.

I skimmed it at the local Barnes & Noble. My random thoughts are:
1. Too much "inside baseball" military stuff for me.
2. Actually quite sympathetic to individual Muslims who are portrayed a the pawns of the Jihadists and then the victims of Western reaction.
3. Very anti fanatics of all religions.
4. Very pessimistic about Jihadist terriorism creating a fanatical Christian reaction which results in the U.S. becoming a right wing Christian fundamentalist dictatorship which Peters most definitely believes is not a good thing.
5. Israel is wiped out by Muslim nuclear weapons, most of the Middle East is depopulated by U.S. nuclear weapons. Again, Peters does not think that this is a good thing.
6. Peters main point is that if the Jihadists think they can create a new Caliphate by terrorist attacks in the West, they are sowing the wind and will reap the whirlwind (total destruction of their nations and their religion).

Aw Jebus what did we do wrong now?:(

In the case you haven't noticed, it is the *inevitable* future of Europe to get invaded, nuked, occupied or otherwise perish in the most horrifying way, be it at the hands of the Americans, the Chinese, the Evol M00slims, the Russians, or god knows who (that includes the Draka as well as alien invaders). ;)

Or, to put it a tad more Orwellian: "Europe is dying. Europe has always been dying." :p

I thought the concept was really interesting, until I saw the phrase "United Godfearing States of America" with a secret police known as "scribes."

Even a Religious Right-dominated US wouldn't go that radical. I could imagine some kind of attempted reversion to the 1950s in many respects, but not to the point of renaming the United States!

I might like this book after all :D

Checked out the descriptions over at Amazon, and yeah, it looks to be somewhat, um, wankerrific? I don't know. Ralph Peters never struck me as the sort on man who would write brainless "kill alla dem mooslims" tripe. His War in 2020 was a techno-thriller masterpiece, better than anything Clancy has done save perhaps Red Storm, sooo...I'll give his new one a shot. As a library check out first. If it passes muster only then will Mr. Peters get my money.

"Masterpiece" might be taking it a bit too far, but he should be credited for his prescience: 2020 has the feel of something written a decade later than it actually was.

Well, yeah, you're right. "Really really good" is probably a better way of putting it. It's just that it's so much better - and different, especially for it's era - than what one usually finds in that genre.

If it was written a decade latter the Soviet offensive would have been crushed in 3 days rather than reach the Rhine in that time.

Ahh Raplh Peters... I read the book, Red Army. To sum it up it was a brilliant book. I think that there were ways for the Soviets to win and not always NATO winning..anything is possible..

To me, the big difference was Peters' casting events as a technocratic dystopia rather than something neutral or positive, as most technothrillers do.

Europe

Actually in the book, the Europeans don't get nuked any worse than the US. Both areas lose some cities to backpack nukes smuggled in. In the case of the Europeans they react by basically killing most of the Muslims in the area. The US tries to rescue them and transport them back to their nations of origin, but no one wants them. Sound familiar? Kind of like the ship filled with the Jewish refugees in the mid 30s.

Ah yes, that is an idea he has mentioned before....apparently we here on this little continent are always 30 seconds or the drop of a hat away from industrialised mass murder....Muslims mostly nowadays.....good times.
