Ralph Nader POTUS in 2000

Everyone..... I plan to make a TL where Ralph Nader Runs for POTUS in 2000 and gets elected, would it be too ASB or could it be possible.

Uhh, way too ASB. Nader wasn't even on the ballot in some states (IIRC), and he got little-to-no media attention. Didn't get invited to the debates, and didn't run any high-profile television spots.

Completely ASB, but it could certainly be an interesting read. Besides, some good stories start off with a nice bit of ASB, or ASR (Alien Space Reptiles - get it? You know, Turtledove? Uhm hello? Is thing on?). :D

He needs the backing of a major liberal organization to split the liberal vote and an extremely weak Republican opponent so that they democratic vote splitting doesn't give said Republican the election. A good POD could be Bush developing some kind of cancer sometime in 1999, preventing him from running for president. This levels the playing field somewhat. The problem is someone like McCain or Dole or Forbes would still win if Nader split the left vote. You need to get Keyes or Buchanan to win the Republican nomination. Or you could have another wealthy businessman somewhere to the right of Perot win the Reform Party nomination, thus also splitting the right's vote.

Damm...... I guess it is ASB, sigh Now I have to post in thr ASB forum.

A while ago I posted an idea on a thread that had a very early PoD - him becoming Governor of Connecticut in the 70s, becoming completely minted, having a hugely popular TV show, major changes to election laws resulting from the 1992 election becoming a complete and utter farce, total mayhem in the Balkans - oh, and Colin Powell as a VP nomination.

Alright everybody the Ralph Nader TL! We can do it........

In this TL
Nader Pays 35000 dollars to run on the republican seat as a senator for conneticut and Plays along with Republican Ideals and pro conservative policy, then once he's senator then he has a shot for president because he will advocate about Abortion being evil blah blah blah that conservative republicans speak about earning their trust in him to run for the primarys, and he makes secret deals with Honda and Toyota against general motors and steps up his criticisms while being gaurenteed funding by Honda and Toyota for his campaign becaus eboth would be vey eager to see a rival car company especially one as powerful as GM be taken out....... Could this work or is it ASB, then when he does win, I plan for him to turn and betray the republicans and try putting foreward most of his plans, To make this possible the POD will be when he's attending Harvard Law school where he meets and befriends future influential people to add to his advantage. What do you guys think.

I think a POD in 1999 would be sufficient. Take out Bush and get a strong reform candidate to put a lot more attention on third party candidates and to split the right. I'll edit this with more later.

EDIT:
Here's a POD. In January of 1999, Governor George W. Bush is diagnosed with prostrate cancer while a regular doctors visit. This dashes any thoughts of a Presidential run from his mind. Come primary season, the front runners are John McCain, Orrin Hatch, and Steve Forbes. I can only see McCain winning the primaries in this scenario, so let's say he is the GOP nominee.

Donald Trump actually announced that he would run as the reform candidate in 2000, but withdraw because of party infighting. Keep him in, say because Bush isn't in so he thinks he has a better shot, and he will easily beat Buchanan. He's a billionaire that will definately draw votes, however he is no Ross Perot and would probably only perform in the low 10's at best (percentage-wise).

Next, the Democratic primaries. There is pretty much no way to prevent Gore from being the party's nominee, so he's still in. Nader is going to have to do very well to draw support from him. One of the best ways to do this is to have him included in the debates, like Perot was in 1992. Unfortunately, in 2000 the Commission on Presidential Debates announced that it would only allow candidates polling at more than 15% into the debates. This measure was introduced to prevent Nader from getting into the debates. It might seem like it would be easier to just create a POD that removes this, but between the 1992 and '96 election the CPD had created a vague rule about the number of news networked endorsing the president deciding which candidates would be in the debates. This, of course, was done to exclude Perot. The 15% rule is better because it is defined, and doesn't leave the CPD room to pick its own candidate.

So, the question is how to get both Nader and Trump polling at above 15%?

What I think I'll do is that George Bush dies in 1999, However when the 15 percent bill is passed Nader can argue that it is unconstitutional Discrimates minor party candidates meaning it does not hold in the constitution and e succeeds, then in Debates Nader will easily trounce Mcain and Al Gore because He will use what he knows and ideas to get people to side with him, Whig is the greateast fearof officials,. How does thq work out.

First of all, it's not a bill that goes through congress. The CPD pretty much has free reign. What you could do is have both McCain and Gore run into series problems, for instance gaffes, in their campaigns that allow both Nader and Trump to sore above 15 right before the debates. Don't forget trump, he is crucial to keep the vote splitting from going to McCain.

Also, would you mind proof reading your posts before you type them in the future? I'm not trying to be a snob, but wading through grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errors can become an eyesore.
