Radical Thinking:Britain's Universal tanks and Troop Carriers in 1940s

an M18 TD with a closed top would have been a better choice for a light Scout tank. That's 40,000 pounds, actually close to the weight of the M24, and far more capable
That's actually a good idea. IMO, it's conceivable you could replace the M4, too, if you'll allow a 17pdr (which IIRC the M18 would accept)--& if the Army (or Armored Board) would go for it (which may be harder).

There was a 90mm M18 but Army thought it too much gun for the chassis.

Then in 1948, the Army changed mind and developed the M56 Scorpion, with an even lighter 7 ton, 28mph chassis and more powerful 90mm gun.

You need to get rid of McNair and a few others on the Armored Board and Ordnance for something to replace that 'perfect' 76mm

Postwar, you had the French go with 13 ton light tanks, very light armor, but a 75mm class cannons with similar Performance to what the Panther had, with an autoloader, large enough to be requiring an oscillating turret so the gun could also elevate
