I'm trying to mess with the borders of the Upper Midwest U.S.
Without going too far back before the War of 1812, what would it have taken for the British to have wanted to hold on more tightly to the entire Red River Valley in the treaty of 1818, instead of cutting it off at the 49th parallel? How badly did the U.S. want that area? What kind of concessions might the British have made in order to retain it?
My only thought right now is a slightly earlier and more successful Selkirk's colony, that leads to some British subjects settling and farming around Grand Forks.
