I'm exploring an idea for a timeline, but I can't seem to find anything on how an Austrian or German citizen in Britain in 1914 could have enlisted in the British Army.
I know most were interned or deported, but does anyone know of any examples of Austrian/Germans who became soldiers serving in the British Army?
For the sake of completeness, I will include Irish regiments, and the Australian Imperial Force, too.
Does anyone know what the enlistment rules or criteria were? How strictly were they enforced?
What sort of identification was needed, if any? How easy was it to enlist under a false name? I'm aware that lots of Australians signed up under false names, for all sorts of reasons. (The ethnic Germans got a hard time, and there were lots of namechanges.
(Yes, the one I'm thinking of is the obvious one, but hopefully the storyline isn't).
Any input gratefully welcomed.
