Question about primaries and conventions

I have been looking all over the net to find the actual roll call votes at the 1976 and 1980 Republican conventions because of an idea I have about Ford going against Reagan in 1980.

I did find the results of the primaries in 1980 which is super but a lot of states (for example NY) were still caucused or conventioned.

Any suggestions?

For 1976, I would recommend tracking down a copy of Jules Witcover's book Marathon, which goes into some detail regarding the back-room machinations at the convention that year. The key vote there was a proposed rules change that would have forced Ford to name a running mate before the presidential balloting; it was defeated by a little more than 100 votes. I seem to recall that James Baker's memoirs contain some discussion of this subject as well; Baker was Ford's chief delegate hunter in '76. Wikipedia has the 1976 and 1980 primary calendar and results.

For background on 1980, try Germond and Witcover's Blue Smoke and Mirrors.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Apollo. I'll also check out Elizabeth Drew, who wrote some good recollections of those elections (and many thereafter).
