Question about a George Romney Presidency

George W. Romney was a serious contender for President during the election of 1968. If he had received the Republican nomination however the question of his place of birth would be taken issue with since he was born in the Mormon colonies in Mexico. How would this be resolved?

Romney was born to American citizens and was perfectly, but not inconceivable that some form of 1960s "Birthers" could arise. A much bigger problem is that he was not presidential material, and not just because he had a Bidenesque penchant for gaffes.

IIRC, Romney was quite liberal within his own party. I think a Romney Presidency is going to be a lot like the Nixon administration, with a little less conservative rhetoric and a lot more liberal policy on issues of housing and Civil Rights. He's also going to take U.S. troops out of Vietnam fairly quickly. IOTL, he ran as the GOP's Gene McCarthy.

"A lot more liberal on housing" as compared to Nixon? Nixon had the same urban development program as Robert Kennedy, namely public-private partnerships to build industry in those communities. So George Romney apes Hubert Humphrey and Gene McCarthy? Good luck with the senior Senator from South Carolina. :p

Considering how close 1968 was, Romney almost certainly wouldn't have been elected precisely because of his religion, so this is kind of a moot point really. Romney sure as hell wouldn't have been able to play a southern strategy; he's certainly locked out of the Deep South, and he'd probably have trouble in the border states.

I misread this as 'a George Romero' presidency - now that'd be interesting, givn the views expressed in his films.

:)

I don't fancy George's chances in November. California here we come... ;)
