Question about 19th century European explorers

There were so many European explorers of the 19th century. Especially the African ones.

Take for example the exploration regarding the source of the Nile.

My question is.

Once these explorers returned back to Europe with the result of their explorations, how did the authorities back in Europe confirm it.

How did they know that it was the real thing and the explorers or their team weren't simply making it all up ?

They often didn’t. That’s how you get things like De Loy’s Ape.

Usually geographic findings would be corroborated through further explorations.
