Puritan World Revolution

The following is my attempt at a sequel to Tony Jones' Puritan World scenario. IMO, Puritan World is probably the most dystopic Tony Jones scenario, after Superpunk of course.

THE FUTURE
Until either the rest of the world falls to the New Commonwealth, or vice versa, there is unlikely to be peace in Puritan World. If the New Commonwealth is ejected from France, or its advance there stalemates, then it is likely that a cold war will develop. Although unlikely, one or other of the two sides may fall from internal political or economic stresses, giving the world to the other by default. Without this, there is likely to be a series of wars until some final, decisive war is fought, perhaps using some new technology to advance that gives one side an overwhelming advantage (perhaps nuclear power, which might arise from one of the more advancing nations, such as the Kingdom of Portugal).

If the war continues in Europe, then it is quite likely that the same sort of events will occur, although without the intervening cold war period.

If the New Commonwealth wins the world, then the Earth will become a Puritan dictatorship. This may eventually liberalise, or fall apart. If they lose, then the Octuple Alliance will divide up the world, setting the stage for future wars and further conflict.

Which side having ultimate victory would be best for humanity as a whole is difficult to say. With either of these outcomes it is unlikely that freedom and democracy will become the worlds dominant political paradigms...

POD
The point of departure from the real world is the confrontation between the English Army, under King Charles I, and that of the Scotch Covenanter army on the banks of the River Tweed in 1639. In the real world Charles' army never even engaged the Scotch because of doubt and indecision among its leadership, leading to a great deal of discontent, and, eventually, the English Civil Wars.

Here, there was slightly less indecision, leading to a battle, but an indecisive one, and still a defeat for the English. This still caused discontent, and lead to an English Civil War, but one where King Charles has somewhat more support than he did in the real world. As such, the English Parliament did not have the support necessary to execute King Charles in 1648, as happened in the real world, and Charles instead went into exile in France.

A living King working from France to regain his throne caused much more unrest and violence in Britain than in the real world, making the Parliamentarian regime much more violent and repressive. This led to the restoration of Charles I to the throne in 1657, and the persecution of the Protestants who fought against him. This in turn lead to the creation of a much larger population in North America, made up of those who fled Britain (including the Cromwells), and a revolution that sets up a new, Puritan, Commonwealth there in 1705. Since then this has grown to be the continental power in North America, and the single most powerful nation on Earth.

Because Britain is both wracked with unrest caused by the forcible 'Catholicisation' of the country, and the emigration of persecuted groups overseas, it never becomes a world power. Instead, the Netherlands and France become the major colonial powers, with Prussia, especially after it, with Austria, re-forms the Holy Roman Empire in the 1860s, a third such power. Africa, India and Asia are divided among these powers, with Russia also taking large portions of India and the Ottoman Empire.

As the New Commonwealth expands and grows, driven on by what it perceives as its God-Given Destiny, it takes over Britain in 1923. This action on their doorsteps forces the various European powers to ally and stand against it, forming the Octuple Alliance.

And now, in 1995, the New Commonwealth has invaded France from its outpost in Britain, and it appears that the final battle between the Puritan New Commonwealth and the rest of the world, interpreted by some as Armageddon, has begun...

The Octuple Alliance
  1. Holy Roman Empire
  2. Kingdom of Denmark-Norway
  3. Kingdom of France
  4. Kingdom of Portugal
  5. Kingdom of Spain
  6. Kingdom of Sweden
  7. Netherlands Republic
  8. Ottoman Empire
  9. Russian Empire
New Commonwealth (NCA)

Originally British territory, the New Commonwealth of the Americas (NCA)achieved independence by war with Britain (1690-1705). The New Commonwealth initially comprised British North America of the time.

In 1792, the New Commonwealth went to war against France and Spain over Louisiana. In 1794, the NCA seized Loisiana territory from France. In subsequent wars, the NCA forced the Spanish from North America.

Outcome: In this sequel, the Octuple Alliance eventually overtakes and destroyes the New Commonwealth.

Post-Commonwealth World

North America
French and Spanish divide up most of North America. The French claim Louisiana Territory, Quebec, and everything in between [Ontario, Eastern U.S.]. The Spanish reclaim all of their lost territory, including California, Mexico, and Florida. The Dutch claim most of (real world) New Jersey and most of Pennsylvania and New York. Denmark-Norway gets Greenland, Nwefoundland, Labrador, Baffin Island, all the smaller islands in the vicinity, and the area around Hudson Bay [corresponding to all of Nunavut, Northwest Territory east of the Mackenzie River, and the northern portions of Manitoba and Ontario. Sweden claims the Maritime Provinces. Russia gets Alaska [which includes Yukon Territory, the sliver of Northwest Territories west of the Mackenzie River, and most of the northern two thirds of British Columbia. The Holy Roman Empire acquires the remainder of North America [Western Canada, the rest of British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, North Dakota]. I am unsure about the EXACT borders, but this would give a rough designation.

Latin America and the Carribean
Spain receives its previous holdings from the Isthmus of Panama to Columbia. Spain also gets all the large Carribean islands: Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, and their minor islets, but all other Carribean islands are divided between the Netherlands, France, Portugal, the Holy Roman Empire, other European nations (in order of their relative claim from largest to smallest).

Oceania: Australia-Pacific
The Dutch get all of Papua New Guinea and the Bismarck Archipelago. Other than that I am unsure about how the former New Commonwealth islands would be divided. Maybe Sweden gets the southern island of New Zealand? (Come on people, let them have something!) Portugal gets Hawaii? Holy Roman Empire gets Eastern Australia?

Asia
Russia gets the rest of Japan, France gets the Phillipines. Ryuku and Okinawa are divided between the Dutch and Portugese.

The details are for another post. How do the Octuple Alliance manage to overthrow and conquer the Commonwealth? If they all work together and turn to China, the Fulani Confederation, Greece, and Korea for mercenaries, perhaps they can outmatch them. The Alliance certainly has superior technology to the commonwealth.
