Puerto Rico Stays Spanish

Suppose the Spanish-American War does not take place, for one reason or another. What might be the long-term effects on Puerto Rico if it remains Spanish past 1898? Will it eventually become independent or might it continue to be part of Spain up to the present? What differences might result in Puerto Rico, economically and culturally, as a result? What differences might result in Spain and the United States?

Wait do you mean no Spanish-American War? Because that's HUGE.
If there's still a war but Spain keeps PR, ultimately there are a lot less Puerto Rican Americans. Puerto Rico could became Republican Spain's Taiwan.

If that happened what happens when Juan Carlos comes to power and essentially restores the republic but as a constitional monarchy?

Well I think that Puerto Rico would only do that for a few years or so before becoming independent. Or it becomes independent if Juan Carlos does the same thing.

I was thinking no Spanish-American War at all, which IS a huge POD of course, but focusing on the effects on Puerto Rico.

Is it possible for Spain to keep Puerto Rico if there is a Spanish-American War? I really don't know enough about that conflict to guess, but in many ways that would be more interesting as it's a POD with much more localized effects...

Yes, Spain could keep the island if throws in the towel sooner.

Puerto Rico was taken as a complete afterthought near the end of the war.

What happens to Cuba in this scenario? Perhaps Cuba and Puerto Rico could end up as part of the same state if they were either granted independence by Spain or acted as a 'Taiwan' during one of Spain's argumentative periods as suggested above.

Would there still be those end of the year college basketball tournaments in Puerto Rico?

edit: an ooc ps to Thande. Now that I've finished the first 3 Thursday Next books, I will be rereading First Among Sequels.

If there's no Spanish-American War I infer that there was a successful American-backed Cuban revolution. That's one pain in the neck the Spaniards lose but they still have the lost-cause-Philipines to nag them. So many butterflies...

Puerto Rico is small enough to be easily absorbable with mainland Spain.
