Prussian Indochina

How could we get a Prussian Indochina, and have Prussia keep the colony up to and including the Great War, if one does arise. Bonus points if you can make Indochina still a heavily German Oriented Set of states till this day.

The Netherlands keeps New Amsterdam after the second Anglo-Dutch war. Well, at least I was planning a Prussian Indochina in my timeline which had that as a POD.

Been watching the simpsons much?
Mr. Burns: "Yes, I'd like to send this letter to the Prusian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?"
Pimple Kid: "This book must be out of date, I don't see Prussia, Siam, or Autogyro"
Mr. Burns: "Keep looking!"

Off the top of my head, I could suggest having France transfer overlordship on Indochina to Germany as part of the 1871 peace treaty, perhaps in exchange for a lighter war indemnity. At the time France had not formally colonized Indochina yet (that would take place in the 1880s) but it very much claimed it as part of its sphere of influence.

Why did the French urge them to do that:confused:

Indeed it is an odd idea! Unless Napoleon III (as president, as I think he was then) was trying to distract the Prussians so they wouldn't interfer in anything he got up to.

Prussia had been urged to annex Formosa by France in the 1850s or so.
I'm not familiar with that. However, France did attempt to grab Taiwan for itself in 1884, which prompted the Qing dynasty to elevate it to the status of province (until then it had been a prefectorate of Fujian).

Its mentioned to Lawrence Sondhaus' work Preparing for Weltpolitik: German Sea Power Before the Tirpitz Era. I've got a copy of it at home which I'll try to remember to look at later. Very interesting book, pretty much shows that Tirpitz was 'johnny come lately' to the big fleet idea - and that Wilhelm II was even later.

Interesting, so the best idea would be during 1871, as a war payment, in exchange for Prussia being nicer elsewhere.

What consequences might this have on future German Colonization

More colonial emphasis in the Asia-Pacific....so likely a oceanic navy, so Britain dosn't feel so threatened.

Germany grabs colonies earlier on....so it probably takes some choice picks, rather then whats left over, and has more of them.

Taiwan, Hainan, the Phillipines, all of New Guinea, pieces of Thailand are all possibilites.... a Kos Canal might happen, chunks being directly annexed of China isn't impossible. Even Korea.... which probably means war with Japan. Which might mean, if Russia doesnt ally with Germany, annexation of the Kurile and Ryukuku islands....

Yes, I agree that the Germans will move to East Asian matters... Bigger slice of China than Tsingtao? Also, considering the close relations of Germany-Siam in OTL, will Siam be even closer?

In OTL, having Indochina enabled the French to carve up a sphere of influence in Yunnan, a result of which was the Hanoi-Kunming railway. Doubtless if the Germans have Indochina, they'll do the same. And while in OTL they waited for the convenient murder of two missionaries in 1897 to seize Qingdao (a Chinese saying at the time went, "When the missionaries show up, the soldiers aren't far behind"), with a secure foothold in southern China they may not consider they need an excuse at all to spread their presence to Shandong.

Hainan, which is just off the coast from Indochina, may make a tempting target as well, especially considering its strategic potential to control sea routes in the South China Sea.

Also, considering the close relations of Germany-Siam in OTL, will Siam be even closer?
Perhaps Siam may become wary of Germany if the latter acquires a colonial presence right across its eastern border.
