Project Adolphus

Just to prove that this thing can get off the ground, here's the first update of hopefully many from the programming department. At the moment, I'm working alone, but PoeFacedKilla and I should soon be collaborating via Dropbox.

I've managed to turn this square of blue:

7VAvN.png

into a grid of hexagons, which utilize my debug water texture:

It's done through a process of loading the textures and storing their pixels in a hashed data structure, referenced by filename. The game then loads a file called colormap.xml, which maps the RGB values of the pixels in the map file to texture names. Such a process allows for a bitmap to become a tile-based map for the game.

That being said, we need features to add. Feedback is always appreciated, and please join us in the IRC today (technically speaking) at 7:00 EST.
Looks F-in great man! sorry i haven't been much help yet i've been busy
but we'll talk over some stuff tonight and since i'm on a month break i'll begin programming tonight

That's not all. If you configure Git, you can see what has been done since. Provinces are now defined in an XML file, the camera moves, and you can select about half of the hexes.

Just as a note then, I'll be in the car during the start of the meeting, and after that I'll be home for supper, so I'll probably be unable to attend unfortunately.

Sorry guys, I was sick and totally forgot about the meeting. The channel should not have been down though...it works for me today. Were you guys able to meet at all?

Nope. On the up side, PoeFacedKilla PMed me, promising an update "soon." I've yet to see one, but he's still evidently with us.

I am so sorry. I've been busy and completely forgot about this IRC session, and I hope we can get something done Sunday. Please do PM me about what needs to get done, and I'll see what I can manage.

That's fine. I believe we're still waiting for Poe to update the codebase, but I have checked so I could be late. We already have the outlines of a Game Design Document, but this Sunday we need to put some meet on the bones, and start talking about milestones and deadlines.

Looking forward to seeing everybody then.

Okay, I missed Sunday by fault of assorted obligations, and I can't seem to find the IRC on Mibbit. Furthermore, there's no update to the repository. Anyone here still interested in the project or should we let it die?

It came down to just Dangi and I as the interested parties, and then I got swamped by real life and missed a few meetings, which understandably turned him off.

It takes the commitment of multiple parties to make something like this work.

Essentially. I've been wasting my time elsewhere of late, as well. I had really hoped to get something going, but this site's community is (understandably) probably too volatile to manage such a project.

Can we keep this going?

Perhaps. I'm kind of busy right now, but all I ever functioned as was Project manager/coordinator and a stopgap artist until we found someone dedicated (and talented) for that position. So I'm not that key. But I feel kind of bad with Dangi doing all of the heavy lifting and me unable to help (and we don't have any other interested programmers afaik).

I guess if you're a programmer or artist (proficient with 2D art/texturing i.e. Photoshop or GIMP and/or 3D modelling i.e. Blender) and you're both interested in this project AND willing to commit to dedicating a significant amount of time for months to working on a project without promise of remuneration, tell us in a post and/or PM me.

You know, I'm not 'proficient' by any means with technical stuff, but considering how this sorta grinded to a halt, maybe it would still be useful to brainstorm different ideas, for when you guys pick back up on it? AFAIK, you decided on the HRE, largely due to the hex-based system, but creating and fine-tuning the boundaries of such small states would probably be tedious. Also, some new ideas might get people inspired back into it :) ,so here are a few ideas of mine (it'd be great if people were vocal on what they think of these, btw):

-Colonial New Zealand, or at least the North Island. Yes, this may seem a little biased, but it would be very interesting, requiring realistic ways to simulate the relationships between the various tribes and the British. For instance, there would have to be a mana system in place. An example of this would be that the tribe/s directly adjacent to the British colonial capital would receive a mana boost. Mana essentially being honour could work in a similar manner to the Imperial Authority system of the HRE in Victoria II. The Kingitanga movement in particular wouuld be very interesting to simulate.

-The Roman Conquest of Gaul/Lesser Germania. The shifting alliances and potential for simulating both pitched and guerrilla war. Also, creating a 'civilised' and 'barbarian' structure for different peoples would be pretty cool, especially since we'd need a middle-ground for Romanised Celts.

Well, I think thiis game was supposed to be about the H.R.E., in the thirty years war.
