Principality of Theodoro survival?

The Principality of Theodoro was situated on the coast of the Crimean peninsula. Connected culturally and historically to the Empire of Trebizond and of course Byzantium it finally fell to the Ottomans after Constantinople fell. Many historians consider it to be the last surviving vestige of the Eastern Roman Empire and in turn the Roman Empire.

With a Pod after Constantinople’s fall (gives you little room for manoeuvre) could this tiny “Greco/Roman/Gothic” enclave have survived for much longer than in the Otl?

They'd need a powerful patron, or to take over all or part of the Crimean Peninsula somehow and form part of a larger alliance against the ottomans and even that wouldn't be a sure thing.

Their problem is similar to the ERE or Trebizond's at the end. They don't have many, if any resources to work with except at least the Byzantines had Constantinople, which was still a powerful city even after being gutted by the Crusaders, and the Komnenos had Trebizond, which was a wealthy city and a major terminus on the Silk road. Theodoro has, well nothing.

Maybe if one of the later crusades go better and the Ottomans have to focus on the Balkans. Then the principality might survive just because it is insignificant enough to not be worth it if the Ottomans have to focus their strength elsewhere. But that is a very short term solution. They'd have to spawn the best diplomat ever to secure their survival and hopefully expand to take some of the trading colonies in Crimea. It is beyond a long shot, but I suppose anything is possible.

There was at the time of the invasion talk of an alliance with Moldavia and Genoa? Could such as alliance prevent their defeat? Also from an immediate perspective it seems archeological evidence pointed to the Ottomans having detailed plans of the defences which were pre-eminent it seems on that coastline with three banks of outer walls and an impressive keep. Many Janassaries it was said were killed in the assault on Doros the capital. I do think this seige which was ultimately successful obviously needs to fail and very easily could have failed according the sources I have researched however it’s continued survival is surely more questionable.

AFAIK, there was an alliance with Moldavia, and an implicit alliance with Genoa, at the time of the Ottoman conquest. Around 300 Moldovan soldiers sent by Stephen the Great took part in the defense of Theodoro/Mangup; however, Moldavia simply wasn't powerful enough to prevent it.

One way to prolong the life of the Principality could be to make Mengli-Giray win the civil war in the Crimean Khanate - not immediately, but a little before 1475. This might avoid the decisive Ottoman invasion. And since Mengli-Giray spent some of his exile in Theodoro, and was friendly with the Principality, he could be grateful. Or at least politely indifferent to its continued existence.

Another way: prevent the Ottoman invasion and violent rearrangement of Crimea by setting the Ottomans back in the Balkans. The wars fought by Matthias Corvinus need to be more successful. Ideally, the Kingdom of Bosnia and the Despotate of Serbia should be re-established as Hungarian clients, and Wallachia kept firmly out of the Ottoman sphere. Either way, the Ottomans need to be forced to direct their full attention to the Balkans for some time, letting Theodoro and the Genoese posessions off the hook until further notice.
