Princess Margaret Becomes Queen Margaret of England - 1952

Queen Elizabeth the II has ruled England for 65 years. Elizabeth's only sibling was Princess Margaret. Margaret was a bit of a scandal to the Royal Family during her lifetime. Considered a bit of a "loose woman", Margaret was known to have had multiple affairs during her lifetime. When her sister became Queen, a young man, Peter Townsend, who had shown interest in Princess Margaret, divorced his wife in order to marry Margaret. Luckily that didn't take. She was also a notorious smoker, and passed away from complications in 2002.

So here's my question. For arguments' sake, lets just say something happened to Elizabeth before she became queen. Margaret is left as the sole heir and becomes Queen of England in 1952. How does England change from then to now with Margaret on the throne instead of Elizabeth?

God help the monarchy....however, she could tell the Archbishop of Canterbury and all the sticks in the mud to "eff off" and marry Peter Townsend. I've always thought that she would have been a much happier woman if she'd been allowed to do so.

I think it depends on when it happens. If she has some time to savour her future as monarch and not as eternal #2, perhaps she will act in a more proper way.

Let me ask something: If Margareth resigns because of that just like Edward VIII did, who takes the throne?

Mountbatten, I think.

King Mountbatten, well that could be a good timeline. Usually they either go for Edward VIII continuing in power and Elizabeth taking over older or George VI having some more decades and Elizabeth still being crowned. A Mountbatten timeline could be cool and innovative... apart from the fact that the power is on the parliament so the changes would be mostly cosmetic :v

That is, of course, if this whole “thing” that happened to Elizabeth doesn’t butterfly away or end that relationship.

She had the ability to break it off with Townsend as the Queen’s sister OTL so as Queen she should be even more aware of what is expected of her.
