Princess Diana dies in childbirth

In the early 90's there were rumors of martial trouble between Diana and Charles. Andrew Morton prepared a book Diana: Her True Story ready to expose the insides of the royal marriage to the world. However in Oct of 1991 the Royal Family announced Diana was pregnant, and Morton shelved his book for a more opportune time. Tragically in May of 1992 Diana dies giving birth to a girl, and Morton subsequently burns all manuscripts and research he has. The girl is named Elizabeth Diana.

This young lady, Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth Diana would be 26 years old now, what happened to her, and history, in between?

I suppose the Prince of Wales' standing is slightly better, at least in the short term, as the scandalmongery remains low-level because of Morton's actions. I mean there'll always be rumors of marital trouble, and whispered jokes about the Princess Elizabeth's parentage, but no different than with Prince Harry.

The Express will have to find some other celebrity to obsess about to the point of absurdity.

I wonder if the Prince of Wales marries Camilla post-95, though. On the one hand, he actually loves her, on the other hand, she's a divorcee and whatever the mores of the man on the street, the Firm seem to always have been rather conservative.

I think there’d be more sympathy for Prince Charles, rather than the stiff fellow who drove away the beloved princess he’d be the heartbroken prince who lost his princess. Plus he’d be a single father with a newborn and William and Harry would both be significantly younger than when their mother died OTL.

I think without the scandal of having been a home wrecker Camilla get a better public image. She might even become Princess of Wales this time around.

Assuming William and Harry’s weddings are as popular in TTL everyone would be chomping at the bit for Princess Elizabeth’s wedding...

Camilla could come across as the helping hand to the single father, gaining sympathy from the public.
I could imagine them getting married sooner, with stronger support from public.

As for Princess Elizabeth Diana, being raised without Diana would make her slightly different to her brothers.

She’d be raised along side Eugiene who is only a year older. She would most likely be allowed to marry someone similar to William and Harry

The problem is that the marriages of William and Harry were enabled--arguably only made possible--by the British monarchy's recognition that 1997 was a very close call. If the British monarchy had not bent to acknowledge the immense public grief over the death of Diana, then its long-term future may have been undermined. Acknowledging change was necessary--they had to acknowledge that striving to establish dynastic marriages was no longer going to work in the era of love matches.

Will the death of Diana a half-dozen years early have the same effect?

Was 1997 really all that close of a call?

Interesting. Who do they marry instead? British aristocratic family or foreign monarchy?

What dynastic marriages could exist in a Europe where the royals and aristocrats have almost no political power? I don't know the finer points of constitutional monarchy, so could anyone tell me how the "spouse approval" process worked for the British crown after WWII?

Diana was selected as a suitable spouse for Charles because of her Spencer lineage despite her age, while Camille was too old despite being Charles' love match.

Perhaps Princess Madeleine of Sweden for William, their both 35.

Charlotte Casiraghi, granddaughter of Prince Rainier of Monaco, daughter of the Princess of Hanover, 31 to Harry’s 33

Prince Joachim of Belgium, Archduke of Austria-Esta is 26, for Princess Elizabeth.

Now all three of my ‘royal’ matches are European, does anyone have any British posibilites?

Both are catholic. That might cause some problems.

Ohhh... crap.

Forgot about that.

Pretty much limits it to Scandinavia, eh?

I think Spencer marriage show that Royalty or even Nobility no longer necessity. Virgin (or at least unmarried) British-born girl with upper middle class background and four British (or at least Protestant) grandparent.

This is a good match.
