Prince William and Malia Obama

Despite the creepiness, somehow Prince Willian's first wife...some five or more years from now, becomes Malia Obama. How does this effect the world?

First, in case you didn't notice the media hype, he's already married. Are you assuming a PoD that he didn't fall in love with Kate nee Middleton? Or are you assuming ASB's?

Second, he's sixteen years older than Malia Obama. It's happened before, but it's quite weird - especially since you say it's "five or more years from now," which would make Miss Obama a minimum of 19 years old. Marrying a 35+-year-old man.

I suggest you instead run this exercise with Chelsea Clinton, who is only two years older than Prince William, and explicitly state what you want happening with Princess Kate.

Since the O-man will be out of office by then (barring him being declared Monarch of the Kingdom of Columbia), I think the most likely reaction would be a general "that's kinda weird" sentiment from the public. I would love to see what the Daily Mail would have to say about it.

Valid points, but I did post this in the Alternate Histroy section for a reason. And it wasn't to re-hash why the original timeline history inevitably had to play out as it did. Chelsea Clinton is an intriguing scenario, but I am more curious about the dimension in which the 19 year old Malia marries a 35 year old William than antyhing else. To preserve his character, it could as easily be a 29 year old Malia marrying a 45 year old William. Since the age of the lady is now all the rage.

This is indeed weird. 19 year old women should marry - if at all - someone of their own age.

Or, if they are hot, someone at least 25 years older with lots of money...

When I first saw the title, I misread it as "Prince William and Mafia Obama.". I did a double-take.

Someone should run with that, it may be ASB as all hell, but the adventures of a Brit prince mixed up with a black Chicago mob boss from Hawaii is too entertaining.

While I will agree that there is a certain ICK! factor to this thread I am constrained to note the following:

The "fairytale wedding" of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer, which was THE event of the early '80s, took place when he was 34 and she had just turned 20 (and I mean just 28 days after her birthday). The age gap being 14 years 5 months and nary a soul thought it odd.

The age gap between William and Malia is 16 years. Does 17 months take it from fairytale to ASB?

So, icky? Yes, mainly due to the fact that Malia is 13 right now, and projecting her as married has a creepy factor of about 6.74.

ASB? No.

My main complaint with the OP is that no POD is suggested, which is generally a required part of any scenario, and it instead relies on handwave.

The handwavium necessary for this union to become a reality pushes this scenario our into the Oort clouds of plausibility. Perhaps if such a romance did blossom, we'd see William giving up his place in the line of succession "for the woman he loves". Thus we eventually get King Henry IX (after Elizabeth II and Charles III / George VII die). Regardless, as the monarch wields little power, this romance and marriage will have little impact on the world scene, unless it ends up straining US-British relations.

However, Harry and William are very, VERY aware of the problems with their parent's marriage, and setting up a repeat is something that borders on ASB, although it doesn't perhaps quite reach that level.

If it hadn't been for that, then this would be quite implausible, but nowhere near ASB.

There are quite a number of problems with this, and as William is married, I rather suspect this is headed rapidly into ASB territory. Harry and Malia are fourteen years apart, too. Might be better to find one of the Bush daughters. Chelsea is married, too.

If you wish to explore the interracial angle, a better option would be for either prince to meet a woman of similar age on a West Indies tour, such as the daughter of a Governor-General, a senior politician or someone else with notable standing that she would be formally introduced to a prince.

Chelsea Clinton would have caused major butterflies as it would have killed her mother's Senate career and presidential run. You can't be an apolitical princess with a highly political parents. The romance would have had to end, or the Clinton's would both have to retire from public life. You simply can't have the parents of the HRH Duchess of Cambridge be political lightning rods, even in a foreign country.

Barbara Bush is also problematic, despite her father being retired from public life, because of his status as a hate figure for much of the political left.
