Prince Charles & William ; Govs. Gen. of Australia.

Prince Charles expressed an interest in becoming the Governor General of Australia in the early 80s, but we turned him down. Similarly William has expressed an interest more recently, but again he's been turned down.

WI Charles did a stint here as GG in the early 80s? Presumably getting the Job instead of Ninian Stephen in 1982, although he might not stay in the job for 7 years like NS. Possibly one of both his sons would have been born here if he had done a stint.

Would this pave the way for the lot of them to go GG'ing around the Commonwealth, Canada, NZ, Fiji etc?

Would Will and Harry get GG gigs here if Dad had done a stint in the 80s?

it would have been good on the job trianing for him and william as well i cant see the ALP leting that happen

Malcolm Fraser presided over a very erratic time in Oz politics, he did.

Though I guess we'll have to wait a couple of years for the thirty-year-rule to show us if this was ever seriously considered by Cabinet in the early eighties.

I think little Johnny rejected Will before Krudd was elected.

I'd be surprised if Howard ever considered having a 20-something royal heir as head of state*; his enthusiasm for the monarchy was outweighed by his desire not to give Costello any political ammunition in the party room, IMHO.

*The Queen isn't our head of state, the GG is. That's the monarchist position, believe it or not.
