Prime Minister Smith

I'm surprised this doesn't seem to have been done- what if John Smith had either survived or not had his fatal heart attack and led Labour into government in 1997 (as we can be fairly sure he would've done)?

there was no way labour was going to lose the 1997 election, hell, even Kinnock could've won 1997

under smith it wouldn't quite have been as large a landslide as under blair, maybe labour would have 370-85 seats. Smith wouldn't have gone ahead with the millennium dome, he probably wouldn't have signed up to tory spending plans as blair and brown did, and he would've retired in 2002-4, he wouldn't have wanted to go on and on.
Labour would've been re-elected in 2001, but with a significantly reduced majority, as its likely the tories wouldn't be obliterated as they were in otl 1997, and under Portillo or Michael Howard they would regroup and run a decent campaign. Its fair to say the tories may well have won the 2005/6 election.
