Prime Minister King is assassinated

Just a curiosity. Say that Prime Minister King is assassinated by a disgruntled former minister or someone that just hated him during WWII. Who would succeed him as Prime Minister? Is there a clear line of succession for the Prime Ministership or does the Liberal Party elect a new person to be leader of the party?

I would rate such a scenario highly unlikely. On the federal level we've only had one assassination since Confederation. But handwaving, when during WWII? During the conscription crisis when the Liberal Party was a hair's breadth away from fracturing along linguistic lines in mid-1944 and was only saved by King's Machiavellian and unmatched political skills? In 1941, when Lapointe was dying and there was no clear successor? If after 1941 I would say Louis St-Laurent as per OTL. Howe is too abrasive and too ignorant of Quebec realities.

So, after 1941, St. Laurent would be the most likely choice in the event of said assassination?

Then what about prior to 1941, say in 1940. Would the Liberal party be split as to who would be nominated as the Prime Minister?

Before or after the March election? In this case, I say that Lapointe becomes PM until his death. The problem with King is that he was so politically dominant (leader for 29 years, PM for 21) and other Anglophone Cabinet members such nonentities that I cannot think of anyone else to do the job. Howe is too abrasive, Cardin is also unwell, Dandurand is too old and nearly senile, etc. Most likely they will try and woo Adelard Godbout from Quebec as King tried to do before he found Lapointe. The problem is that Godbout has no federal experience, very poor English and little knowledge of English Canada. By this point he was not yet reviled as a "vendu" as he was later by most Quebecers as was the case by the time of the 1944 provincial election. So I'd say Howe with St-Laurent or Godbout as his Quebec lieutenant.

That's all I needed, Thanks! And I understand how it's hard to find information about other liberals during King's reign; there isn't even a wiki page of Lapointe.
