Prime Minister Juarez

Maximilian I of Mexico proposed a meeting with Juarez and offered him the post of Prime Minister of the Empire. Juarez was fleeing with his wife and children from Maximilian's and French armies at the time, but he did manage to turn it down. WI he decided to in fact take up the position of Prime Minister? Would the Empire of Mexico do any better? Or would Juarez simply fade away once the Empire fell?

Ole Max was probably baiting a trap. If Juarez had excepted the proposal he would have been first framed for something, then murdered. Somehow I think if he had excepted the gig his life expectancy would have dropped.

Juárez, the great Mexican liberal, colluding with conservative forces? That's ASB.

Yet Maximilian as Emperor had various liberal policies. Recall as Emperor the man angered both the liberals as a monarch, and the conservatives for kepping land reforms, religious freedoms, and extending the right to vote beyond the landholding class. So if the offer is laid out correctly I can see Juarez as grudingly taking it.

Juarez wouldn't accept. Maximilian, even by offering the position to Juarez, will completely alienate himself further from the conservative Mexicans that had originally asked him to take the throne. Signing onto Maximilian's regime is a sure fire way of ending up first in line for a spot before a firing squad.

Juarez was passionately against Maximilian and what he represented. Worldwide liberal leaders protested Juarez executing Max after the French withdrew, including Juarez's hero, Garibaldi. Yet he refused them all, and killed the would-be Emperor anyways.
