PRI doesn't steal the Mexican Presidential election, 1988

How would President Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas go?

I note that this would butterfly away the December Mistake, which was Salinas' fault...

Well probably no Nafta, at least during his term. Perhaps a PRD presidency would cause a political realignment, with the PRI splintering; the dinosaurios (old guard) soldier on as a rump but younger, neoliberal technocrats like Salinas defect to an augmented PAN.

I could see that. Maybe it would take the PRI losing the next election too, though. I'm not sure.

Reagan wouldn't be dumb enough to coup Cardenas would he...?

Lol, I read this as Public Radio International at first. I was all psyched up for some intense speculation on an alternate NPR, but alas :D

I'm not sure he wouldn't simply overheat it in another way. Like a raft of poorly thought-out infrastructure/industrial projects á la Echeverría?
That said loans are presumably off the table due to the 1980's Peso crisis.
