Prevent the Cold War

I think it's possible, but very difficult. It would definitely require changing the leadership in the Soviet Union and maybe the United States as well. Stalin was the kind of guy who, even if the US offered him a completely honest and mutually beneficial understanding between the two countries, would assume it was either naiveté or a trick; I would suggest having him die "heroically" defending Moscow. Beria, as monstrous as he was as a person, may be a good choice for Russia's leadership. It would be really hard to get him into power, though (literally everyone else seems to have hated his guts, and with good reason).

A good start would be the attempts in 1945 - 1947 to negotiate control of atomic weapons at the UN. The talks failed IOTL for a couple of reasons; the biggest gap between the US and USSR negotiating positions was that the US wanted to create an inspection and verification system before we gave up our bombs, while the USSR wanted it the other way around. On a purely technological level, a compromise was definitely possible - maybe the US could melt down the bombs but keep the fissiles under UN guard, for example. We can't get at them without everyone knowing about it, but if the Red Army goes for the other half of Europe it will take a relatively short period of time to reconstitute the arsenal, and after the final treaty is agreed to the fissiles can be used for scientific research. But it would require some mutual trust and a willingness by the USSR of 1945 to ever let foreign inspectors on their territory, among other road blocks.

I say a more effective Barbarossa. The Wallies liberate Eastern Europe. I would also have Jaing win the Chinese Civil War.
