Prester John's Empire - Effects of a Spanish-Ethiopian Alliance?

Ethiopian Emperors such as Yeshaq I and Zera Yaqob have made attempts to contact Aragon/Spain in order to secure technical assistance. If either had been more successful with securing continuous contact with the Spanish Kingdoms or Europe in general, what might this mean for both countries?

Spain had more resources than Portugal, so presumably could do more with Ethiopia than Portugal did IOTL.

However what does this mean for the Papal Bull that divided the world into west for Spain and East for Portugal?

I think the issue with that is the very tenuous line of communications between the two IOTL which might be intensified with the Egyptians becoming more hostile to Ethiopia over this. How much more effective than the Portuguese would Castile/Aragon/Spain be, especially when they're carrying out the Reconquista around this time?

Effectiveness is hard to measure, because the Portuguese did a hell of a lot with what they had. If Spain was heading east they'd likely be able to put 2 or 3 times as many ships and men into the Indian Ocean, so they'd likely be able to do twice as much as the Portuguese.

However given the timeframe you're talking about I doubt Spain would be able to do much, not until Spain was united a few decades later. The contact would broaden Spain's horizons of course.

If Spain's got an increased pool of resources, this might mean that Ethiopia acquires assistance in developing skilled labor much earlier on and become more self-sufficient.

What can Spain do at the moment?
