Presidential candidate(s) against the bailout

WI McCain had said that we live in a Free Market nation and banks that make dreadful mistakes should just go bust.

Or Obama had said that that any Federal aid should go to the people who had been in many cases tricked into unwise loans and foreclosures should be stopped]

OR both opposed the deal

Or that there were other major candidates (Perhaps a Surviving Wellstone running because a Clinton campaign was so centrist, or |Huckabee against Guiliani for same reasons or - real fun, both)

Would this wreck the deal. Would some other radical measure come up as an alternative?

Whoever says it will take an instant 10-point lead. Either the market continues on its up-down way and the crisis is over, leading to that candidate's victory, or the markets tank in a demonstration of who's boss and that candidate loses by 10 points as confidence collapses and the recession is blamed on that candidate. If any candidate opposes, the deal is obviously off. If both oppose, the deal is off and Obama is advantaged 3 points because Democrats are seen as pro-little guy and because it happened under GWB policies.

The alternative that would gain acceptance under this scenario would be a lot more limited in dollar amount (50-200 billion) and contain apparently more stringent conditions to tide until a new President is inaugurated and a new system can be debated. Nothing much changes unless a wave of second and third-tier races turn Democrat in Congress and bring in protectionist populist anti-Wall-Street citizen legislators to shift the partisan balance away from the center and toward tough and systematic change a la the New Deal (and specifically things like recreating Carter-Glass and the like).
