President Tom Daschle

I was just watching a Daily Show interview with this man (Former Democratic Senator and US Senate Majority Leader) and was astonished at how.. well, likeable he was. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and charismatic, but somehow not intimidating at all.

Okay, history's verdict is that he was pretty ineffective, but as we've seen, it's hard to get anything done in a 51/49 Senate.

Anyways, let's play "make a President". When's his best shot? 2004? Will we have to have an earlier POD to give him a chance?

I think he'd be a better candidate than Kerry. Then again I think a ham sandwich would be a better candidate than Kerry.

He couldn't have made it in 2004, not without a much earlier POD, because he was tagged as a loser about Thune booted him out of his Senate seat in 2002.

I think the best chance he would have had was to run in 2000 and for some reason either Gore doesn't run, or something happens to Gore, like some health issues.

Believe it or not, for a variety of reasons, he might have been a better candidate then Gore in the general, because I think he would have spent more time campaigning in the purple states of the midwest and the mountain west and the Southwest, instead of spending so much time campaigning in the South as Gore did.

He also wouldn't have nearly as many weaknesses as Gore did.

Perhaps the POD here could simply be that he runs for president in 2004. Remember, he ran for re-election against Thune in 2004, not 2002. He lost by only 4500 votes or so...considering that it was a bad year for Democrats overall, he didn't do that badly. He could've had a chance in the general election against Bush.

I guess the question is: what gets him to run? I could see him running in 2008 if he won reelection in 2004, but I'm not sure what gets into the race in 2004.
