President Thurmond?

Thurmond was for a long time President Pro Temp of the Senate, and as such, third in the line of succession after the Vice President and the Speaker of the House. Take out these two and the President, and you have it: President Thurmond!

It's that sort of thinking that keeps the bums from The Party or the other The Party (aside from a few ideological details, as far as I'm concerned, there ain't a whole lot of difference between the two monolithic political machines) in office. If more people realized that the world is not black-and-white, then perhaps politicians will have to start earning their votes. I wish the Tea Party wasn't choked with such religious dagma (well the Paliners anyway, not sure just how Libertarians the Paulers are), otherwise I might egg them on to kick the bums out of office.

I'd say that it's a movement largely free of that dogma, though overly populist in tone.

Regardless, short of a far earlier POD, Strom Thurmond could not have won the 1948 election.
