President Richard M Nixon, elected in 1961!

What if Nixon had managed to defeat JFK in 1960? It was a pretty close election, after all. Had he won, how might things have gone differently? Would we have had detente with the Soviets and China somewhat sooner? Would the Cuban Missle Crisis have happened, and if it had, would there have been a different outcome? What about the domestic front? Vietnam wasn't happening yet, but it was on the horizon, and the Civil Rights struggle was ongoing. Lastly, could Nixon have managed to win a second term, or would he have lost to Kennedy (probably the nominee), in 1964?

Ideas?

Phew, I really messed up on this one... of course he would've been elected in 1960, and this should've been in the After 1900 forum... I'll just slink back under my rock and pretend I never posted this like I did. Ah, the dangers of posting while sleep-deprived...

Presidents are elected by the Electoral College in January. For Nixon that would be January 1961.

One 4th of July nit to pick...

The electors vote in December, so he/she is elected then. The vote is reported to Congress in January and it becomes public.

Maybe that's how things work in DuQuense Land, but here in the United States of America the EC meets to vote in December.

So, December 1960 for Richard Nixon.
