President Reagan to resign?

Bush definitely won't be able to run in 1992 if this happens, although there will be other significant butterflies before that.

Why wouldn't he? If it happens after he wins re-election, than he wouldn't be blocked by the 22nd amendement, would he?

The 22nd does not allow a President to serve more than 8 years. For Bush to be eligible in 1992 Reagan has to resign on or after 1/20/87, if before that then Bush is ineligible in 1992.

There'd be a whole lot of "I told you" so's from the Democrats and those who said he was too old. They'd be right, and frankly they were right; if Reagan wasn't in the early stages of Alzheimer's, he was at least going senile into his second term.

Bush still presumably wins in '88 but with a different VP: maybe Lugar or Hatch? (My preference, Bob Kasten, is too inexperienced)
