President Powell's Cabinet?

So let's say that Colin Powell was elected in say either 1996 or 2000,who would've most likely been in his cabinet?

I personally think he would've put Cheney in there from what i've read, they apparently got along.

Really interesting question. Dont know how seriously Powell took the other Republican heavy weights of the era. 'Getting Along' is a bit different from respect or willingness to rely. I wonder what evidence Powell left in his bio & other more recent writing

Hard to say. Certainly, whoever's on the bottom of the ticket would influence his decisions, and given Powell's well documented moderate stances on social issues (pro-life, ambivalent-leaning-towards-pro on gay marriage/civil unions), he'd probably pick someone who has more cache with the conservative base.

Not sure where you got that, but Cheney and Powell loathe each other. Powell has all but said that he considers Cheney and Rumsfeld delusional, and Cheney basically bragged about getting Powell fired as SecState. No idea what their relationship was like prior to serving in Bush's cabinet, but by 2004 they probably couldn't be in the same room together.

So who would you say he'd potentially pick? What about say,Tommy Thompson or maybe John Ashcroft?

I think Powell would be the type to pick technocrats from the bureaucracy or business world. Undersecretaries and longtime politicos. At least for the most part.

Jack Kemp could get a place, as could Liddy Dole. McCain and Lieberman perhaps. But if you want a list, I'd suggest looking beyond the realm of politicians as we usually think of them.

At least that's what I think.

As Powell is from New York, what about having either:
Governor Pete Wilson or Representative Bob Dornan, both from California.
Governor Bill Clements or Senator Phil Gramm from Texas.
As the vice president?

An all military ticket could look good with Senator John McCain from Arizona?

Gramm seems like a good running mate on paper-a geographical and political balance in many ways.

(Of course, Gramm's entire 1996 campaign looked good on paper and didn't quite work out either).
