President Obama, Vice President Palin: I kid you not, its actually possible

Needless to say after the GFC, an Obama victory was inevitable in 2008. However, prior to that things were actully quite close, with McCain leading at one point. With this in mind, I was playing around with this electoral simulator(http://www.270towin.com/) with potential scenarios had the GFC been avoided/delayed... and apparently adding New Mexico, Nevada and Iowa to the 2004 Kerry states results in a 269/269 result in the electoral college.

This of course means that congress decides. The House obviously chooses Obama, but as for the senate-well, Lieberman's a wild card. He could vote for Palin, then Cheney becomes the tie breaker and votes Palin.

Presto, possibly the oddest political combination in American history-aside from the ideological gulf, they represent two "firsts", and are the most inexeperienced people to have ever held their respective slots.

If you wanted to go the blatant and easy route you could postulate that Obama is assasinated soon after his selection by the house, and thus Palin not Obama is inaugarated in Janurary. But even with Obama surviving and Palin remaining a mere VP, I'm sure their are interesting consequences.

Given the Senate arithmatic- all those Republican seats being defended from 02 + the one vote per state rule for a house election I have to say that President McCain and VP Biden is less unlikely

What tie-break? The Senate wasn't close to being tied after 2006. Who Lieberman does or doesn't vote for is irrelevant.

No, it is the 110th congress(the one elected in 2006) that makes the pick.

VP a spare part...

If by some means this happened, then the Vice Presidency would revert really fast to its older role--a place holder that does nothing of importance. The VP is only as important as the president decides to let him or her be.

I thought that the electors votes were counted in January. According to the 20th Amendment the new Congress takes office on January 3rd

This.

The new Congress would get to decide on who becomes President/Vice in case of an electoral college tie. In 2009 Congress was sworn in on the 4th and the EC results were only unsealed and validated on the 6th, so the entire situation is a non-starter, but besides that... why exactly would Lieberman commit political suicide?

Even so, as soon as Palin is sworn in as Vice, that role goes back to being nothing more than an honorary position and Palin would probably resign if she had any self respect.
