President Marries in Office.

Not as big as the controversy to have an unmarried president enter office. "Why isn't he married? what's wrong with him? Isnt he Christian??"

So, I think anyone would just be rlieved when he marries, even tough she's 27 years younger. "He's a normal person after all".

I'm not exactly certain on this, not being a church-goer myself, but don't most Christian denominations accept that there are those who are not 'called to marriage', which I think is the phrase often used?

I think it would be difficult for a single man who's never been married to be elected to the presidency. Not impossible, but very difficult. A widower might have a chance as would someone who has been divorced, but a homosexual would have little if any chance of even making it to the primaries (My opinion only). The masses tend to vote for those who have families, especially young children (Look at JFK and even Obama).

Remember one thing about the presidential requirements: you have to be at least 35 years old to run. It might seem strange for someone older than that to have never been married. Even if they did get married while in office, the media and the other party would go over every sordid detail in that person's past.

Here is one single man who could run for President without accusations of his sexuality.

I basically agree with your points. However I would point out that in the UK there has been one prime minister Ted Heath, in the early 1970's, who was never married and who it has (in retrospect) been assumed may possibly have been gay. Now I know the UK is VERY different than the USA, in terms of the far greater religiosity of the latter, however this was the early 1970's, when the vast majority of Britons would have still viewed homosexuality as immoral. The most interesting thing about Heath was that I gather at the time, his marital status was very little discussed or thought a important topic for media attention. Heath was always able to find female company to social events, but it is assumed that these were friends and accquaintances of his.

BTW, Heath was never actually romantically linked to anyone male or female, and many assume he may have been asexual or at the very least just uninterested in finding a partner. Even on a platonic level, he is said to have been exceptionally cold and unlikable.

Let´s see the list of First Ladies.

All Presidents from Harding on have been married throughout their period of office.

Woodrow Wilson became a widower in August 1914, and remarried in office, December 1915. In the meantime, his daughter Margaret Wilson (then 28 and unmarried) was the last First Lady not the wife of the president.

Benjamin Harrison became a widower in October 1892, and remarried 3 years after leaving office.

Then we have Cleveland - a 47 year old bachelor elected President, who went on to marry his 21 year old ward.

Chester Arthur was widowed a year before taking office, and did not remarry.

Buchanan was a President never married, taking office at 65.

John Tyler was widowed in September 1842, and remarried in June 1844.

Martin van Buren had been widowed 18 years before taking office, and not remarried.

Andrew Jackson was widowed 3 months before taking office, and did not remarry.

Jefferson was a widower 19 years before taking office, and did not remarry.

So... who have been the last seriously likely Presidents who were eligible to marry? Vice Presidents, and opposing candidates?

Yes all mainstream Christian denominations accept people who aren't married. Indeed in some churches like Roman Catholics people are encouraged to remain celibate. But the problem would be gay rumors if someone isn't married.

I just saw that Iceland elected the first openly gay head of state in history, and she's female. Most of the posts referred to a gay male president...what about a gay female?

Also, I wonder what it would take for a hermaphrodite to get elected...or what would happen if the person kept it hidden until after the election.

Transsexuals come to mind, too...

In principle that is true. However she is the PM, not the president, she wasn't elected but appointed and she is merely a head of caretaker government until new parliament is elected.[/Radio Yerevan]
