Margaret Chase Smith was a Republican Senator from Maine from 1949 to 1973. She was probably best known for her Declaration of Conscience, a speech she delivered on the Senate floor in 1950 in opposition to Joe McCarthy and his allies and methods, earning her some praise, but also making her a bogeyman of the conservative movement. She was a moderate and a hawk, however, so her political views, in general, would have had wide support.

Smith ran for President in 1964, the first woman to do so with the intent of actually winning the Presidency. Of course, her candidacy was doomed to fail in OTL. But I think that with a few somewhat different events (perhaps a greater backlash against McCarthyism in the conservative wing of the party; an earlier, better funded, and/or stronger Smith campaign; and/or no Nelson Rockefeller, William Scranton, and/or Henry Cabot Lodge running for President in 1964), Smith may have actually had a shot at the Presidency in 1964 or 1968. Any thoughts?
