President Huey Long in 1940?

How is this possible and what impact would this have? I think Long is the purest definition of a wild card since he seems like the type to do anything or do a 180 flip on stuff as long as he saw it benefiting him or the nation.

Giuseppe Zangara assassinates Roosevelt while he's visiting Miami, leaving John Nance Garner as Pres, only to lose against Styles Bridges in '36. The absolute state of the country would be a perfect environment for Long to make a successful run, especially with the New Deal being virtually DOA.

As I stated at https://www.alternatehistory.com/fo...empt-what-happens-after.455769/#post-17881511 my view is that if Long had mot been assassinated, he not only would he not be able to win the White House in 1936, but that by 1940 he would be much more likely to end up in jail than in the White House, given the indictments and convictions of so many Long cronies in OTL--some of whom would probably be all too glad to testify against him for lighter sentences. (I know that Long's defenders say that if he had lived, he would have kept them honest. Let's just say that I'm skeptical.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_W._Leche

Of course if someone other than FDR is elected in 1932 (or if FDR is killed by Zangara in 1933) all sorts of things are conceivable by 1940, but Long would at best be one of many possibilities.

I second this.

His last chance is 1936, and he would need to withstand a massive wave of evidence against him. If he fails to win in '36 then it is over... Unless we consider the fact that he was quite young when he died, just 42, so he might show up again in the early 1950s and try something new, but who knows?
