In 1964 President Lincoln considering replacing Vice President Hannibal Hamlin of Maine with Andrew Johnson of Tennessee. Confederate President Jefferson Davis considered replacing General John Bell Hood with Joseph Johnston, but changed his mind at the last minute. The result was the fall of Atlanta before the Republican Convention. Hannibal remained as Vice President.
On April 14, 1865 a conspiracy led by John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Lincoln, and made attempts on the lives of Hamlin, and Secretary of States Seward. Hamlin narrowly escapes injury, and rallied the nation. He decided to following Lincoln's plan of reconciliation with the South. The radical Republicans attempt to impeach Hamlin, but fail to gather enough support and the effort fails. Hamlin is elected to a second term by naming General Grant as his running mate.
