President Gray Davis

I was thinking a few months ago that he'd be an interesting choice to head Obama's Department of Energy. After all, who's got more experience dealing with energy crises on an executive level?

Leaving out ridiculous line-of-succession scenarios, it's likely to be a high-profile position in this administration. Could easily put him back on the map. Let's say Obama's biggest successes come in the realm of energy independence and alternative fuels and he gets to know and like Davis, and Davis shares a lot of the credit.

Biden opts out for a second term as VP. Clinton gets hit with some scandal or blows a peace accord or three (or what have you) and doesn't seek the vice presidency or the presidency in 2016. Gates or Hagel are at Defense (so they're out) and Geithner at Treasury is not a politician. Holder (DoJ), Napolitano (DHS) and Richardson (Commerce) are discouraged as the DNC doesn't want two minorities on the ticket. Davis steps up as VP. He gets Obama's backing, and if it's been a successful eight years, maybe he pulls off the coattails-riding victory with maybe Napolitano as his VP.

The Republicans would have to nominate a candidate with less charisma than Davis. Is there any such human?

You have a point, though Gore was pegged with the same reputation and he's overcome that in spades in the last seven years. The man got millions of people excited about a slideshow for god's sake!

Maybe the greying of Gray will lend him presence and projection. Or maybe the Republicans by then have purged themselves of everything but utter loonies. Lots of things can happen.

However about Al Gore for president with Gray Davis as his vice president? People won't be able to recall anything of either administration since they were so boring.

Followed by Steve Forbes? In turn followed by Joe Leiberman?

Oh if only we could convince George Will and Ben Stein to run for political office...They could campaign against those two guys from the beginning of the "You've Gotta Fight for your Right to Party" video.

But then if America really cared about pep I think Jesse Jackson would've been president in 1988. The people have other concerns. And anyway, I'm sure Davis can muster at least as much energy as Kerry or Dukakis. After all, if the Republicans are '50s crooners, the Democrats are smooth jazz; not heavy metal. The bar isn't exactly that high.
