President Fremont

How can Fremont win the 1856 presidential election for the Republicans?

What would his presidency look like? What impact would this have on Slave Tensions?

His winning the election isn't that likely.

Based on his actions in OTL during the ACW, President Freemont's impact on "Slave Tensions" is going to be like the proverbial bull in the proverbial china shop at best.

If you don't have Southern secession between the election and Fremont taking office, you will once he gets a chance to do something and he'll probably drive most of the border south straight into the arms of the Confederacy.

About a year ago, we had a long discussion on this here.

Simply put, Fremont winning is very, very, very hard if not downright implausible if you're just looking at PODs over the course of the election in 1856. If you're looking over a wider scope, then a whole host of variables come into play. In 1856, though, the candidate most likely to do better if Fremont does well is Filmore (the American Party candidate), who attracted far more support of former Whigs.
