President Fred Thompson

We can have scenarios for the late Fred Thompson http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2015/11/01/fred-thompson-obit/75014234/ getting the GOP presidential nomination in 2008, but it is very doubtful that any Republican could have won the general election that year. So is there any way we can get him nominated and elected in 2000? I think the POD for Thompson being nominated for *president* in 2000 has to be GW Bush not being elected governor of Texas in 1994--although of course there could also be a Bush/Thompson ticket (with Bush later dying in office...): http://articles.latimes.com/2000/jul/17/news/mn-54370 ("Bush might get a bigger electoral bang by reaching out to the McCain coalition. Two prominent McCain supporters look to still be in the mix. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee brings star-power charisma and the alluring possibility of pressing Gore in his home state, but also a flamboyant bachelor's life that's landed him in the tabloids...")

Alternatively, if Bush lost the 2000 election, Thompson would likely be much better set up for a win in 2004 than he was in 2008.

Bush could have a disastrous first term and get LBJ'd, then Thompson would be very well set up within 2004.

You could have him nominated in 2000, by having Bush lose in 1994 and have McCain sit the election out. You could also have, as someone else said, have Gore win in 2000 and have Thompson win in 2004. A third way to get Thompson elected is to have Kerry beat Bush in 2004, and have McCain and Romney not run or really screw up their campaigns, and then with the economy collapsing, Fred Thompson beats Kerry in the general election of 2008.

If he runs and wins election by himself, as opposed of being a late Bush's VP, who would his running mate be? Because if you go with the latter TL of Bush-Kerry-Tompson, then have him win reelection in 2012, this choice would become very relevant, because that VP would assume the presidency now.

Hmm... Romney would probably get re elected in 2006 with Kerry in the White House. Thompson could choose Romney. He could also choose Pawlenty, if GW is popular in his post Presidency, he could choose Jeb Bush (that is if he's willing to be at the bottom of the ticket). There are probably better choices than this but these are the only ones at the top of my head.
