President Edmund Muskie

The Nixonian Dirty Tricks Department fails and/or is found out.

Muskie was ahead of Nixon in early polling and was hurt by the (possible) crying and by the faked by Nixon French-Canadian thing.

So Muskie wins the nomination handily, beating back George Wallace and McGovern, picks somebody good to be VP, and defeats Nixon in November. This presupposes a rather better Muskie campaign, as well, perhaps he's a little more anti-war and that gets him some of the McGovern people.

As for the Presidency? I have no idea. Probably a little to the left of Nixon, particularly on the war, but Nixon enacted a lot of centrist to left domestic programs anyway.
